Water RItes Statement:
Water is an essential constant in human endeavor: birthing, sustaining and
quenching human life. Water may be relaxing, playful and horrifying.
Water rituals are found in great variety throughout human cultures; most
share the utilization of methods and symbols to evoke transcendence through
a familiar action. Though these practices differ in form, consideration of
the sacred in the everyday experience unifies the individual with global
themes of life and death, cleansing and renewal. The paintings in Water Rites present images from commonly shared experience with references to both life-sustaining and life-threatening moments, opening a space of uncertainty.

Rebecca Hammʼs large-scale watercolor paintings in Quiddity: the essence of a thing present points where nature overcomes and reclaims --gradually or dramatically-- human constructs. Hamm creates energetic, abstracted visions that overflow with color and hidden life. At a distance, the stream emerges and the rock forms in a constant state of flux. The serenity of nature is simultaneously presented as mysterious and comforting; fascinating and awe striking; terrifying and instructive.
